What’s Your Purpose?

Why do you train? More, specifically why do you train CrossFit? It's hard, it hurts and it requires a shit load of hard work. Wouldn't it be easier to just ride the elliptical machine? Now I know why I do CrossFit, several reasons really. One, I'm a glutton for punishment and I guess I still believe in the old saying, "No Pain, No Gain" but I'm also a little crazy and I don't imagine this is why most people do CrossFit. I also like to push the limits and see what my body is capable of doing. Plus if someone else has done it, you can bet I'm going to try and do it too, only faster. I guess somewhere in my list of reasons for CrossFitting I know it will improve my health, fitness and longevity as well, which is probably the more common answer. I believe it's important to have your reasons for training hard like we do so that the next time you're in the middle of a WOD and feel like quitting you'll remember why you're there.

I began thinking about this after reading a blog post on anywherefit by Blair Morrison. Blair finished 7th overall at the 2009 CrossFit games and now blogs about his workouts which he performs all over the world.

Blair says, "Training without purpose, in my opinion, is like feeding coal to an engine that will never leave the stockyards. Sessions cannot be strings of circles dropping like zeroes behind us. They have to be straight lines of motion towards a goal, each day leading to the next and to a single growing sum. Without purpose, fitness is an endless spiral of repetition and pseudo accomplishment for which we have no measure." You can read the entire post at the link above.
