My First Time

My friend Tai over at CrossFit Montgomery County had a good post that made the affiliate page on the main site today. He talks about his first CrossFit workout. I can still remember mine and how bad it sucked. I had found the CrossFit website and was really intrigued by what they did. I spent a couple of weeks spending several hours a day on the site watching videos and reading articles. I was really into what they were doing but I have to admit I was a bit skeptical at first. CrossFit was claiming they could get you in the best shape of your life with these short workouts that last around 10-20 mins.

I was just getting back into working out after a serve case of vertigo kept me from working out for 6 months. I was doing some of the CrossFit exercises but never a full WOD. So one day back in February of 2008, roughly about two years ago now, I decided I was going to give one of the WOD's a try. At the time I was working for my friends at Breakway Fitness, who now own CrossFit Breakway. I decided I was going to do what ever the main site WOD was for that day. Just my luck, her name was Fran. I was unaware at the time but she had a reputation for making grown men cry. I looked at the comments and results posted to the main site, and based on some of the better times for males around my age and weight I was figuring this would take less than 5 mins. At the time I didn't know how to do a kipping pull-up and I had never done a thruster. Fran kicked my ass. I finished around 15-16 mins and was totally destroyed. I wanted to cry, puke, etc. It was the hardest workout I had ever done. I literally went home and went to sleep for several hours, I was completely destroyed. I remember thinking that there was no possible way people could do that under 5 mins.

A couple of days later I happened to see the famous video of Greg A and Annie S (a couple of original fire breathers from Santa Cruz) doing Fran. They both finished under 3 mins and I was stunned. Now I realized how out of shape I was and that I needed to start CrossFitting right away. It's changed my life and I've been hooked ever since.
