The number one question I get as a CrossFit Kids coach is about kids lifting weights. Is it safe? Most parents fear growth-plate damage which can lead to stunted growth.
Parents realize that their football player may get a broken bones, or if you swim you could drown. However parents realize that drowning is rare or no one would let their kids join the swim team. According to Dr. John Gary’s research and an article he wrote in the CrossFit Journal, growth-plate damage is an acute and rare injury. It is not something normal to be expected out of the weight lifting experience. In fact it is very difficult to Google and find evidence that weight lifting is damaging for kids. Most of the evidence you will find online will point out the benefits of strength training for kids.
Parents need to also know that growth-plate injury is an acute injury like breaking a bone. Weight lifting does not cumulatively cause growth plate damage, for example, if you deadlift for many years you will not slowly hurt your growth plate. In addition, there are now medical procedures to fix the growth plate if it is broken that weren’t available 10+ years ago when many of these perceptions were created.
All of the research does say that the program should be specifically designed for kids, which is why a program like CrossFit kids is ideal. Hope to see your kids in class soon!
